The Briefing is this publication’s entire News category. One post, Monday morning, five to eight short items, each carrying a take rather than a summary. If there is nothing to say about an item beyond what happened, the item does not run.
That rule is the whole editorial position. Aggregation without a view is available everywhere at no cost and is worth what it costs.
The format is also a decision about what a publication this size can do honestly. Standalone daily news requires a reporting operation, a frequency floor, and a legal budget. Pretending otherwise produces the kind of regional site that rewrites press releases and calls it coverage.
What the Briefing will carry in a normal week: county commission votes that will change what a place looks like in five years, state agency decisions on access and permitting, court filings that matter to the region, and the occasional item from the trade press that has not reached general readers.
What it will not carry: crime blotter, weather, and anything where our take would amount to noting that a thing occurred.
It publishes Monday at seven in the morning, Central time.
